These beautiful children were accompanying their Grandfather one pleasant afternoon in Gereshk. The grandfather was gracious to pose with me and this brood later as well, but this image captures both the haunting beauty and the desperate plight of so many of the children in Afghanistan. They just break your heart.

I no longer recall if this tomb belongs to Napoleon’s brother or uncle – it was something like that. Housed in the same superstructure, it’s amazing how the blue light imbues the room with the cold stillness of death.
